Ticket or Tour?

The courtyards of Prague Castle are free to walk from 6:00 to 22:00; the buildings are not. The castle’s Main circuit ticket opens St Vitus Cathedral, the Old Royal Palace, St George’s Basilica and Golden Lane, one entry each over two days, for 450 CZK an adult (hrad.cz, November 2026), with no guide. For buying online, Prague Castle’s own site points to GetYourGuide, where Prague Castle Administration sells it as Prague: Official Entry Ticket to Prague Castle, from US$21 (checked November 2026). A guided tour puts someone beside you to explain what you see, for about two and a half hours, with the same ticket included.

How a Visit to Prague Castle Works

What the ticket opens, what the courtyards give you for free, when to go in winter, the guard at noon, and how to get up the hill.

What the ticket opens

BuildingWhat you seeNote
St Vitus CathedralThe Gothic cathedral, its chapels and royal tombsThe free front part of the nave has been closed since 25 October 2023; inside needs the ticket
Old Royal PalaceVladislav Hall and the old seat of the Czech kingsShuts for a week every October for state events
St George’s BasilicaThe Romanesque basilica on St George’s Square
Golden LaneThe row of small houses under the castle wall, with the Daliborka tower

The price list is the castle’s own: 450 CZK for adults, 300 CZK reduced (ages 6 to 16, students up to 26, people 65 and over), 950 CZK for a family of up to two adults and five children under 16; children under 6 go free (hrad.cz, November 2026). Each building takes one entry, the ticket lasts two days, and it cannot be refunded at the castle’s desks. The Great South Tower of the cathedral, 287 steps, is a separate 200 CZK ticket and is in no circuit. Prague Castle tickets sets out every ticket and where to buy it.

Ticket or tour, in short

The 450 CZK at the castle was about US$20.70 at the Czech National Bank’s rate of 2 November 2026, which is where the online ticket sits too: the difference is that you hold it before you arrive and can cancel up to 24 hours ahead. What neither gives you is an explanation. The castle hires out its own audio guide for 350 CZK (plus a 500 CZK deposit) at the information centre on the Third Courtyard, about three hours with 96 stops, and its own guides charge 250 CZK an hour a person in English for groups of four or more, ticket extra.

So the honest split is this. If you like to wander at your own speed, buy the ticket and spend the second day on whatever you missed. If this is your first visit and you want to know why the cathedral matters to the Czechs, a guided tour is worth its higher price: Prague: Castle Tour with Local Guide and Entry Ticket (Fun in Prague) from US$58, or Prague Castle: Small-Group Tour with a local guide (Inna Poljakova) for at most ten people, from US$52, both with entry (checked November 2026).

Before you go in winter

Map of Prague Castle: the free courtyards, St George's Square and Hradčany Square in one colour, the buildings on the Main circuit ticket (St Vitus Cathedral, the Old Royal Palace, St George's Basilica, Golden Lane) in another, and the seasonal Royal Garden and South Gardens
Free to walk and on the ticket: the courtyards and squares are open 6:00 to 22:00; the four buildings need the Main circuit ticket; the gardens close from November to February.

The winter season at the castle runs from 1 November to 31 March. The buildings open at 9:00; hrad.cz prints a 17:00 close on its Czech hours page and 16:00 on its English one (both read November 2026), so be inside by 15:30 and check the castle’s site on the day. St Vitus opens to visitors only at 12:00 on Sundays, after the services, and it closes at short notice for church and state events. The Royal Garden, the South Gardens and the Stag Moat are closed to the public from November to the end of February, and the Royal Summer Palace in the Royal Garden is under a reconstruction that began in May 2026 and is planned to take almost two years.

One date is worth knowing: on Saturday 28 November 2026 the castle holds an open day, with free entry to the visitor buildings from 9:00 to 17:00 (last entry 16:30) and the state rooms opened through the Matthias Gate. Expect it to be busy. Is Prague Castle free? has the rest of what costs nothing, and Prague Castle opening hours the full table.

Where it is and how to get there

Prague Castle, Hrad I. nádvoří 1, Prague 1 - Hradčany: from the Matthias Gate on Hradčany Square to Golden Lane and the Old Castle Steps at the east end.

Prague Castle sits on the hill of Hradčany above the Lesser Town, at Hrad I. nádvoří 1, 119 08 Prague 1. Its own directions start with tram 22 or 23 to the stop Pražský hrad, then left over the Powder Bridge: 393 m on foot to the castle information centre by the cathedral, about five minutes. From Malostranská metro (line A) it is 472 m up the Old Castle Steps to the east gate by the Black Tower; most people come up by tram and walk down the steps. Expect random bag checks at the entrances and leave bulky luggage at your hotel: the castle asks visitors not to bring it. How to get to Prague Castle has every way up, from Charles Bridge too.

The guard at noon

Illustration: a pale stone courtyard with a baroque gate in the middle, two Castle Guard sentries in dark blue-grey uniforms standing at the gate and a small crowd in winter coats watching from a distance
Illustration. The First Courtyard in front of the Matthias Gate.

Every day at noon the Castle Guard changes ceremonially in the First Courtyard, the Courtyard of Honour in front of the Matthias Gate, where the President greets state visitors (hrad.cz). It is outdoors and free, and the courtyard fills before noon, so come early for a view from the front. Since 10 September 2026 the guards have worn their dark blue uniforms, which they keep for the rest of the year. A visit planned round it works well: the ceremony at noon, then the cathedral, which on a Sunday opens to visitors at the same hour.

The buildings, one page each

St Vitus Cathedral explains what you see inside, the tower climb and the service closures. Golden Lane covers the little houses and the Daliborka tower. Both are on the one ticket, which is why most visitors take the four in a single walk: cathedral, palace, basilica, lane, then down the Old Castle Steps.
